S. Balachander was one of the highly celebrated artistes of his time. His was a life of fulfillment. He was a multi-faceted personality and was a Percussionist, Mock dancer, Poet, Singer, Humorist, Cine actor, Music composer, Chess player, Photographer and more than all these he was a staunch believer of sacredness of music.

S. Balachander was born to V.Sundaram Iyer and Parvati at Madras in a musical environment. His father was an advocate and a connoisseur and patron of music. S.ramjam, his brother is a brilliant classical musician. The brothers gave duet concerts all over India and abroad under the name "Prabhat Prodigy Stars". At eighteen Balachander switched over to veena. He has received numerous awards including Sangeetha Natak Akademy award (1977), D.Lit from World Academy of Arts and Culture, Tirupathi, Vainika Kalanidhi, Nada Brahmam, etc.
