I am 65, young of heart, liking the good things of life, not merely material, but also intellectual and spiritual. I am a lover and life-long student of music, right from my elementary school days. Apart from a regular learning of Tamil (Thevaram and Divyaprabandham) songs for some time, I have been a self-taught musician (not for an occupation, though), both sastriya vocal and flute. I have attended Music Academy and several other cutcheries as well as lecdems ever since the fifties, predominantly in Chennai, and some in Mumbai. I introduced myself, being a newly regd. member in this forum. Now, my topic is: although several vocal and instrumental musicians have sprung up,a number of them certainly of a high class, on the audience side, I am afraid there is no adequate growth for Carnatic music, quite notably, as I think, among the younger generation in India and the Indian diaspora. A society's calibre in economic and sociocultural fields is said to be highly correlated to a widespread taste in its traditional music as well as contributions to classical music by the contemporary generation. India's achievements in science, technology, music, mathematics, etc., and in terms of economic achievements, I say, are low, and this fact runs parallel to the highly diminished taste of Indians in classical music and a correspondingly growing interest in light and pop music. I welcome the other members of Musical Nirvana forum to take up this discussion and offer your views and suggestions on this topic. Let us enlighten ourselves through this discussion on this decline with ideas on a rejuvenation in this sphere. Thank you in advance.
