Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan was one of the most influential Hindustani vocalists of the 20th century. Along with his cousin, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan, he was responsible for popularizing making Kirana Gharana.
Abdul Wahid Khan was born into a musical family. He belonged to the Kirana musical family which traced its roots to musician brothers Ghulam Ali and Ghulam Maula. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan also belonged to the same family. He was also married to Wahid Khan's sister Gafooran Bibi, though their relation soured because Abdul Karim Khan later neglected her and married Tarabai Mane.
Ustad Wahid Khan is known as a great, though tough, teacher. This is surprising considering the fact that Wahid Khan's hearing was deficient (he was also called Behre Wahid Khan). A large number of his students became great musicians - Hirabai Barodekar, Saraswati Rane, Sureshbabu Mane, Ghazal Queen Begum Akhtar, Pt Pran Nath, Sarangi Maestro Pt Ram Narayan, playback singer Mohammed Rafi. He also had great influence on Ustad Amir Khan. Ustad Wahid Khan and Ustad Abdul Karim Khan had started evolving the Vilambit Khayal. This was Amir Khan's inspiration for his ati vilambit singing, which became his trade mark.
Ustad Wahid Khan did not have a son until 1946, when Hafizullah Khan was born. But Wahid Khan passed away in 1950. Later Hafizullah was trained by his uncles and became a successful Sarangiya, continuing the musical tradition of the family.
The early 78 rpm recordings of Ustad Wahid Khan have been re-rleased on cassettes by RPG in their Classical Gold series. Longer recordings are also available on LPs.
