Pt C R Vyas is a master composer and musician par excellence who represents some six decades of single-minded devotion to all that is authentically traditional in the field of Hindustani classical music. Recoginition came late for this maestro who was awarded the prestigious Kalidas Samman some time back.
Pt Chintaman Raghunath Vyas was born in 1923 in a family of Sanskrit pandits and musicians. He first learnt from Govindrao Bhatambrekar of the Kirana school for nearly a decade. Then he came to Bombay and started working in ITC. By this time he was giving concerts. But continued to learn from Gwalior teacher Rajarambua Paradkar after office work. Then he lerant from Agra gharana maestro Jagannathbua Purohit, who had a great traditional repertoire and was also a major composer of bandish.
Pt Vyas learnt composition skills primarily from Purohit. Over the decades, Vyas has composed scores of bandishes in old ragas and new ones which have been sung by his many disciples and published in book form too.
Pt Vyas has passed on his vast knowledge to his sons santoor player Satish and vocalist Suhas, apart from others like Lalit Rao, Shubha Mudgal.
