Dagar Brothers, Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar (1933-1994) and Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar (1934-1989), were inheritors to the throne in the long line of Dagars and were the most prominent Dagars of the later part of 20th century. They are said to be the 19th generation of the unbroken Dagar family Dhrupad tradition.
Nasir Zahiruddin and Nasir Faiyazuddin were born in Indore (Madhya Pradesh) in 1933 and 1934. Soon after, their father and the great vocalist Ustad Nasiruddin Khan died. Thus, the training for the brothers was from their elder brothers, the senior Dagar Brothers, Ustads Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Nasir Aminuddin Dagar.
After the early demise of Ustad Nasir Moinuddin Dagar, senior Dagar brothers were broken up. Ustads Nasir Zahiruddin Dagar and Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar, the younger brothers inherited the mantle of Dhrupad Jugalbandhi. As they matured, they became quite famous and came to be known as the Dagar Brothers. Thus, Nasir Moinuddin Dagar and Nasir Aminuddin Dagar are now known as the senior Dagar Brothers or the Senior Dagar Brothers.
Dagar Brothers performed a very important role in the revival of Dhrupad tradition , carrying forward the great work done by their elder brothers. They are primarily responsible for establing a firm niche for Dhrupad in the Indian classical music scene, performing frequently all over the world.
Unlike the senior dagar brothers, the younger brothers are well recorded and several of their albums are avialable. But they passed away at a relative young age of 61 and 65 respectively. Ustad Faiyaz Wasifuddin Dagar, the son of Nasir Faiyazuddin Dagar is trained in Dagar traditions and is keeping the family tradition alive.
