Profile

Pt D K Datar is one of the few Hindustani masters of violin.

D K Datar was born into a musical family. He was first trained by his father N K Datar. He had his initial violin training from Pt Vighneshwar Shastri and Prof B. R. Deodhar. His close association with his maternal uncle and legendary vocalist Pandit D. V. Paluskar influenced his gayaki style of violin playing.

Pt Datar started his career as an accompanist to great singers of the time like D. V. Paluskar, Saraswati Rane, Hirabai Barodekar, Narayanrao Vyas, Kumar Gandharva and Kishori Amonkar. He even used to sing vocals at All India Radio. He used to accompany D V Pulaskar, till his untimely death in 1955. Later he started playing mainly solo. He excels in both classical khayal and lighter foms like thumri, bhajan etc. He has also collaborated with other instrumentalists like Shahid Parvez, Hariprasad Chaurasia, Vijay Raghav Rao, Sultan Khan, Devendra Murdeshvar.

Pt Datar has received several awards including the Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1996.
