Profile

Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan was one of the most important vocalists of the first half of 20th century.

Vilayat Hussain Khan was born into a musical family. His father Ustad nathan Khan was a court musician of the Maharaja of Mysore. After the untimely demise of his father he moved to Jaipur and was adopted by his Grand Uncle Dada Mohd. Baksha Sahib. Initial music training was under Ustad Karamat Khan and Kaleem Khan. Later he came under the tutelage of Aftabe Mausiqi Ustad Faiyyaz Khan. He was also trained by Ghulam Abbas Khan, grand maternal father if Ustad Faiyyaz Khan. He moved to Bombay in 1914 and was guided by his elder brother Mohd. Khan there.

Vilayat Hussain Khan came to be well known in music circles as he used to sing before Ustad Faiyyaz Khan's concerts. He had a sonorous voice and his presenatation was melodious. He had a large repertoire of Khyal, Tarana, Dhamar and Dhrupad. Just like his guru, he was also an accomplished composer. His pen name was Pranpiya. He trained a large number of disciples who went on to become great musicians like Pt Jagannath Bua Purohit (Gunidas) and Dutta Bua Ichalkaranjikar. His son Ustad Yunus Hussain Khan became an expert vocalist as well.

T-Series has released Ustad Vilayat Hussain Khan's AIR recordings in six CDs.
