Ustad Fayyaz Ahmed Khan and Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan were the most important Kirana Gharana vocalist duo of 20th century.
Fayyaz Ahmed Khan and Niaz Ahmed Khan were born in Jaipur in a musical family of the Kirana Gharana. Their father Ustad Bashir Ahmed Khan was a great sarangi maestro. Their uncles Ustad Abdul Karim Khan and Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan had brought Kirana gharana to the center stage of Hindustani music. The brothers were trained in music by their father. Later, after the demise of their father, the younger brother Niaz Ahmed Khan was trained by the elder Fayyaz Ahmed Khan.
Fayyaz Ahmed Khan was a child prodigy. At the age of just nine he was auditioned at AIR and his first concert was broadcast. Later the brothers started singing together and became very popular. Fayyaz Ahmed Khan was also a musicologist and a Urdu poet, using the pen name Fayyaz Jaipuri. He also popularized some rare raaga-s and also composed quite a few of his own. He evolved a system of exposition of the structure of all ragas, based upon not merely Aroha and Avroha, but stress on specific notes. He was considered a musician's musician. Fayyaz Ahmed Khan was awarded the Padmashree by Govt of India.
After the demise of Ustad Fayyaz Ahmed Khan, Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan had a successful solo career. His concert in the albert Hall as part of 1984 Festival of India is still remembered. He also sang the famous Madhuban Mein Radhika (Kohinoor) song with Mohd Rafi. He was the recipient of the Hafiz Ali Award and the prestigious Tansen Award. He passed away recently in August 27, 2003.
The brothers were also good teachers. Several of their disciples have become popular in classical, ghazal and film genres. Prominent disciples include Ustad Dilhad Khan, Sheela Dhar, music director Khayyam, popular singers Mahendra Kapoor, Talat Aziz, Nitin Mukesh and Jagjit Kaur. Ustad Fayyaz Ahmed Khan and Ustad Niaz Ahmed Khan's jugalbandhi LP recordings were quite popular. They are yet to be brought out on CDs, though. Navras has brought out a CD of the brothers titled Invocation (NRCD0124).
